Gary Joe Bergman, 71, of Hillsboro, IL, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017, at 9:26 p.m. at Hillsboro Area Hospital, Hillsboro, IL.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL.  Graveside Services will be held on Friday, October 27, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO.  Family and friends are to meet at the funeral home at 8:30 a.m. to process to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.  Military Rites will be held at graveside.  Rev. Randy Sands, Pastor of Free Methodist Church, Hillsboro, IL will officiate.

Mr. Bergman was born on May 28, 1946, in Litchfield, IL, to the late Marvin "Jake" and Virginia Ione (Davidson) Bergman.  He married Carolyn Sue Baker on June 4, 1966, in Irving, IL, and she survives in Hillsboro, IL.  Mr. Bergman was a retired Boilermaker with Local #363, Belleville, IL.  He served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam War from 1966-1972, spending 13 months Vietnam.  During his lifetime he lived in Hillsboro, IL; Raymond, IL and California then back to Hillsboro, where he spent most of his adult life.  Mr. Bergman was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 3912 of Litchfield; AmVets Post 16; American Legion of Litchfield; and Marine Corps League.  He loved to hunt and fish and be outdoors when he was younger.  His final gift to others was to be an organ and tissue donor.  Mr. Bergman was very proud of his military service and was very active in Veteran's organizations with toy drives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bergman is survived by six children, Loren (wife Paula) Bergman, Swansea, IL; John Bergman, Witt, IL; Michelle Bergman (companion George White), Hillsboro, IL; Beth Ann Clark, High Springs, FL; Holly (husband Joe) Jackson, Collinsville, OK; Doug (wife Elizabeth) Bergman, St. Charles, MO; seven grandchildren, Tristan Bergman; Kimberly Helwig; Natalie Dittmaier; Nathan Bergman; Ryan Bergman; Abigail Bergman and Haylie Jackson; one great grandchild, Aiden Helwig; two brothers, James (wife Helen) Bergman, Waltonville, IL and Dale Bergman, Hillsboro, IL; three sisters, Diane Bergman, Hillsboro, IL; Maxine Robinson, Green River, WY and Kay Bergman, Hillsboro, IL.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bergman was also preceded in death by one daughter, Jody Sue Bergman, in infancy; three brothers, Robert "Bob" Bergman; Donald Bergman and Marvin Bergman in infancy.

Memorials may be given to Donor's Choice.
