Russell Greenwood, age 84, of Hillsboro, Illinois passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2025. Born in Hillsboro and raised in the Coffeen area, Russell’s life was marked by service to his community, a deep love for his family, and his enduring optimism. He was known by all for his friendly greeting, “Beautiful Day,” and his presence left a lasting impact on everyone who met him.
Russell graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1958 and went on to study at Purdue University. His career spanned many decades, beginning in 1964 at Coffeen National Bank, where he worked until 1982. He then became a salesman for Voils Brothers Case IH and Siever Brothers Case IH, followed by a career as an American Family Insurance Agent.
Russell’s commitment to his community was unwavering. He helped establish the Coffeen Little League, the Coffeen Lions Club, and the Coffeen Fire Protection District, where he served as Fire Chief for 20 years, and was a dedicated Hillsboro Hiltopper fan. He was also a member of the Sertomas of Hillsboro, Old Settlers Honor Society, served on the school board for Hillsboro High School and the Hillsboro Area Hospital board.
Russell’s family was his pride and joy. He was a loving father to three sons, Michael (wife, Vicki) Greenwood of Coffeen, Eldon (wife, Jeanne) Greenwood of Coffeen, and Randy (wife, Tammy) Greenwood of Hillsboro. He is also survived by his stepchildren Noah (wife, Melissa) Meade of Grayslake and Morgan (husband, Blake) Johnson of Nokomis; cherished grandchildren, Brandon (wife, Tessa), Cody (wife, Kassie), Dustin (wife, Heather), Devin, Julie (husband, Ryan), Kelli (husband, Mark), Caroline, Owen, Taylor, and Quinn; great grandchildren, Charles, Kimberly, Chelsea, Caitlyn, Caleb, Karsyn, Kinley, Ella, Amya, Kyla, Westin, Hadley, Harrison; great-great grandchildren, Addy, Jackson, Luca, and Landon.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary Greenwood; brother in infancy, Loren; brother, Reginald; first wife, Doris Doyen, whom he married in 1959 and preceded in 1984; and his second wife, Barb Meade, whom he married in 1993 and preceded in 2015.
He is survived by his brother, Ronnie Greenwood of Oregon and his sister, Ramona Taylor of Springfield.
Russell’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and community service will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he had touched.
Services for Mr. Greenwood will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 p.m., and burial will be held at Green Hill Cemetery in Van Burensburg, Illinois. Pastor Randy Sands and Pastor Troy White will be officiating.
