Obituary

John C. Terneus, 88, of Hillsboro, IL, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2021 at 11:29 p.m. at his residence.  A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Hillsboro, IL.  Cremation rites were accorded.  Father Daniel Willenborg, St. Agnes Catholic Church, Hillsboro, IL, will officiate.

Mr. Terneus was born on May 28, 1932 in Decatur, IL to the late Vernon L. and Marguerite L. (Gallagher) Terneus, Sr.  He attended Hillsboro High School, Hillsboro, IL and worked for 15 years at Eagle Pitcher, Hillsboro, IL and then worked at the coal mine in Coffeen, IL until it closed, and then went to the coal mine in Farmersville, IL until he retired.  He married Mary Altevogt on February 12, 1952 in Decatur, IL and she survives in Hillsboro, IL.  Mr. Terneus was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Hillsboro, IL.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Terneus is survived by his children, John (wife Wendy) Terneus of Farmersville, IL, Mike (wife Sharon) Terneus of Butler Township, IL, Tim Terneus of Decatur, IL, Julie (husband Larry) Watson of Jacksonville, IL, Steve (wife Lisa) Terneus of Wildwood MO, and Beth (husband Fritz) Netemeyer of Hillsboro, IL; eighteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and brothers and sister, Vernon “Bud” L. Terneus, Jr. of Hillsboro, IL, Thomas G. Terneus of Chesterfield, MO, and Mickie (husband Mike) Gaither of Florida.

Mr. Terneus was also preceded in death by a brother and sister, Larry J. Terneus and Dorothy Gunn.

Memorials may be given to United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (umdf.org) or Parkinson’s Foundation (Parkinson.org).
