Jerry K. Evans 75, of Vandalia, IL, died September 30, 2023, at HSHS St. Anthony's Hospital in Effingham, Illinois. Visitation will be at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL October 7, 2023, from 10 am to Noon. A Celebration of Life at Noon, followed by Inurnment at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro, IL with Military Rites by Department of Defense. The Family is being assisted by Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home.
Jerry was born September 14, 1948, to Kenneth E. Evans and Rachael (Maninfior) Evans. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1966 and attended Eastern Illinois University graduating with a bachelor's degree in political science and continuing for his master's degree.
After completing his master's degree, he was drafted into the Army where he served as a military policeman at West Point. After his honorable discharge from the military, he accepted the position of Director of Student Services at McKendree University in Lebanon, IL. He subsequently left his position at McKendree for Vandalia High School becoming a Guidance Counsellor where he worked diligently for 30 years assisting students, not only in their academic pursuits, but also in their personal growth and development.
One of Jerry's greatest passions was golf, so it was a natural fit for him to become Vandalia High School's boys' golf coach. He became the winningest coach in Vandalia High School history and was elected to the Vandalia High School Hall of Fame in 2017.
Jerry was a member of Vandalia Country Club, where he enjoyed many rounds of golf, he also was an active member of the Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447.
Jerry cared about people and was a man of strong moral character. He leaves behind many friends and will be missed by the community. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard “Dick” Evans. He is survived by his nephews Kyle R. Evans (Charlyn) of Murfreesboro, TN, and Collin R. Evans (Julie) of Roscoe, IL as well as cousins, Jack Evans, Margaret Evans, Janet Maninfior Compton, Gary Maninfior, John Lambert, Allan Price, and Ron Price.
