Genetta Stella Brown, 84, of Hillsboro, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 12:57 p.m., Friday, May 2, 2025, at Hillsboro Health in Hillsboro, Illinois, with her loving family by her side. Funeral services will be held in Pocahontas, Arkansas with burial to follow at Masonic Cemetery in Pocahontas, Arkansas.
She was born on January 2, 1941, in Biggers, Arkansas, to Cevera Earl and Mabel Elizabeth (Haley) Bradley. Genetta spent her youth in Arkansas and attended Biggers-Reyno School. In 1957, she married Leonard Brown, and in the mid-1960s, they moved to Litchfield, Illinois, where they raised their family together for over 30 years.
A devoted homemaker, Genetta poured her heart into her home and her children. Known for her exceptional Southern cooking, she shared her meals — and her warmth — freely with those she loved. She had a quick wit, a gift for conversation, and a unique way with words, often assigning funny and endearing nicknames to family and friends. Her generosity knew no bounds when it came to those near and dear to her heart.
Faith was central to Genetta’s life. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ in both Arkansas and Illinois, faithfully reading or listening to scripture throughout her life. Her strong belief in God and love for her church community were steady foundations in her life.
Genetta had many passions and quirks that made her unforgettable. She had a keen eye for costume jewelry, a love for coffee and laughter, and a soft spot for door-to-door salespeople — always ready for a good deal. She adored bird watching and was especially fond of dogs. She crocheted countless blankets for her children and grandchildren, watched Jurassic Park movies on repeat, and rarely missed a crossword puzzle. She took great joy in collecting Native American memorabilia and proudly participated in Powwow’s at Lake Lou Yaeger in Litchfield.
Her greatest joy came from being surrounded by her family and friends — laughing, joking, telling stories, and simply sharing time together. Genetta had a heart of gold and a life rich with love, humor, and faith.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Cevera and Mabel; son, Leonard C. Brown, three grandchildren and her four siblings.
She is survived by her children, Larry (Lori) Brown of New Canton, Illinois, Luke W. Brown of Litchfield, Illinois, Earl T. (Jennifer) Brown of Hillsboro, Illinois, and Elizabeth (Troy) Hamlin; daughter in law, Kathy Brown of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas; 9 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
