It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Daniel “Dan” Altenberger of Hillsboro, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, who passed away on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the age of 84, at his home surrounded by his beloved family.
A Funeral Service for Mr. Dan Altenberger will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Bass-Patton-Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Services will start at Noon with burial to follow in Oak Grove cemetery in Hillsboro. Friends may call from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 12, at the funeral home.
Daniel was born the son of Paul R. and Bertha M. (Bost) Altenberger on June 18, 1940, in Karnak, Illinois.
Dan had a kind heart filled with generosity, having always gone the extra mile to support his family. He enjoyed Amateur Radio for several years and attained his extra class license. Daniel had a passion for learning, especially when it came to reading a book or watching television about History. He spent the majority of his working career in the energy industry working for CIPS in Coffeen and in the later years retiring from Ameren as a Gas Control Operator in February of 2003.
Mr. Altenberger is survived by his loving wife Phyllis (Larrison) Altenberger of Hillsboro; sons, Jeff Altenberger of Morrisonville and Shawn (Wife, Lahys) Altenberger of Hillsboro; a daughter, Tammy (Husband, Troy) Lewis of Morrisonville; grandchildren, Heather (Husband, Shane) Segrest; Heath (Wife, Lauren) Lehnen, Lucas Altenberger, Hunter (Fiancé Lakota Page) Lyerla, Logan Altenberger and Brenden Lewis; great-granddaughters, Meghan Lehnen, Rilynne Segrest, Rayna Segrest and Abby Lehnen; as well as his loving nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Paul and Bertha, Dan was preceded in death by his brother Roger (Wife, Donna) Altenberger and sister Bernetta Owen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dan’s honor may be directed towards the donor’s choice.
The Bass-Patton-Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements for Mr. Altenberger.
