Charlotte McCarney Obituary

Charlotte Margaret (Lilja) McCarney, 98, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2021 at 6:30 pm at her home in Hillsboro, Illinois. Cremation rites were accorded and no services are planned at this time.

Mrs. McCarney was born on November 11, 1922, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Peter E. and Irene (Mahoney) Lilja.  She had three siblings; Robert "Buzz" Lilja, and Paul Lilja, Sr. both of Pittsburgh, who preceded her in death, and Ruth (Lilja) Kurcina of Pittsburgh, PA. Mrs. McCarney was a graduate of the ­­Penn High School Class of 1939. 

She served in the United States Naval Reserve (Women’s Reserve better known as the WAVES - Women Accepted for Emergency Service during WWII at the rank of Specialist S: Personnel Supervisor from January 27, 1944 to January 8, 1946.

Mrs. McCarney worked in Executive Management and was the first Manager for Mutual of Omaha’s Tele-Trip Flight Insurance at Eppley Airfield in Omaha, NE.  She also enjoyed representing for the House of Bauer Candy Company, as she traveled throughout Nebraska and Iowa.

“Chi”, as she was known to family and friends, married Dale E. McCarney on April 9, 1947 in Omaha, NE. Her beloved Dale also preceded her in death in March 2008 after 61 years of marriage. 

Mrs. McCarney is survived by two sons, Kimrick M. “Mac” McCarney of Hillsboro, IL and Keric L. McCarney of Park City, UT and four grandchildren.
