Carole Krummel Obituary

Carole M. Krummel, age 85, passed away on May 4, 2024, in McCordsville, Indiana. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 2:00 p.m., with burial beside her husband in  Donnellson Cemetery in Donnellson, Illinois.

She was born Carole Jean Middleton on May 2, 1939, in Savannah, Georgia, and was the older of two daughters of Raymond and Hazel (Williams) Middleton. The family moved to Atlanta in 1953 where Carole graduated from Druid Hills High School then attended Georgia State College. While at Georgia State, she was an active member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. She married Navy Ensign John C. Krummel in 1959 and moved with their two sons to Alaska and seven other states over the course of his Naval career. After twenty years in the service, CDR Krummel retired, and following time in Portsmouth, Ohio the family settled in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1983. CDR Krummel passed away on September 19, 2007, in Oliver Springs, Tennessee. Mrs. Krummel moved to Fishers, Indiana, in August 2017. 

She is survived by sons John Andrew Krummel and wife Kim of McCordsville, Indiana, and Dr. Christopher Lee Krummel of Youngstown, Ohio, as well as grandchildren Colin Krummel and wife Casey (Blair) Krummel; Kylie Krummel Byers and husband Cullen; and Corey Siebert and fiancée Kathleen Crispen. Carole is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Betty M. Moore, and her husband Mel; niece Megan M. Kupratty, her husband Alex, and their children Gabe and Zoe; nephew Thomas Moore, his wife Katie, and their son, Elliott; and several very special nieces and nephews on her husband’s side.

Mrs. Krummel returned to college later in life and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude in English from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1996, and member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, as well as a member of the Laurel Chapter #22, Order of the Eastern Star, in Harriman, Tennessee and of the Clinch Bend Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. While in Oak Ridge, Carole enjoyed volunteer work for many years at Holiday Bureau, an organization that provides toys and clothing at Christmas for families in need, as well as working with the Friends of the Oak Ridge Public Library. Mrs. Krummel was an avid reader and classical music listener and enjoyed researching family history.  

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children in Lexington, Kentucky, or to cancer research or children’s literacy organizations.
