Dr. Harold Wayne Matthews

Dr. Harold W. Matthews, 88, of Hillsboro, IL passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at 7:10 a.m. at St. John's Hospital, Springfield, IL.  Cremation rites were accorded.  A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.  Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL is assisting the family.

Dr. Matthews was born on June 3, 1928, in Grayville, IL, to the late Samuel and Bertha (Ulrich) Matthews.  He was a graduate of Brownstown High School, Brownstown, IL; received his Bachelor's Degree from Taylor University in Indiana and a Doctorate Degree from Saint Louis University in Missouri.  Dr. Matthews married Marietta Carlene Mitchell on August 10, 1951, and she preceded him in death on March 6, 2014.  He was an educator having taught in the Alton School District, Alton, IL; was Principal of Alton Senior High School, Alton, IL; Assistant Superintendent for the Alton School District, Alton, IL; was a College Professor at Bryan College in Tennessee and a Professor at Spring Arbor University in Michigan.  Among the places he lived during his lifetime were Alton, IL; Jackson, MI and Hillsboro, IL.  Dr. Matthews was a member of the United Methodist Church, Alton, IL; Free Methodist Church, Spring Arbor, MI and attended the United Methodist Church, Hillsboro, IL.  He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II.

Dr. Matthews is survived by two sons, Gregory (wife Kim) Matthews, Hillsboro, IL and Douglas (wife Carol) Matthews, Lexington, KY; two granddaughters, Meagan (husband Adam) Beeler, Hillsboro, IL and Rachel (husband Jeff) Olson, Springfield, IL and three great grandchildren, Emersyn Beeler, Matthew Beeler and Eloise Olson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Asbury Seminary, Lexington, KY or the Disabled American Veteran's Association.
