Roy L. Hertel, 68, of Hillsboro, IL passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Montgomery Nursing & Rehab Center in Taylor Springs IL.  A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 29, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Hillsboro, IL.  Rev. Harry Meyer will officate.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro, IL.  There will be no visitation.  

Mr. Hertel was born February 7, 1949, in Du Quoin IL, to Leonard “Jake” & Nola Burnetta (Annear) Hertel.  His father preceded in death on October 12, 1998 and his mother survives in Hillsboro IL.  Mr. Hertel married Nanci Mauton  on December 27, 1980 at the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Hillsboro IL.  She survives in Hillsboro, IL.  Mr. Hertel is a Graduate of Hillsboro High School, Class of 1967.  He received his Bachelor’s Degree in History & Political Science from Greenville College in Greenville IL and continued with post graduate studies at Georgetown University  & Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.  Mr. Hertel assisted with services at Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro IL; was a School Teacher in Coffeen, IL; was the Montgomery Co. Circuit Clerk and worked for the State of Illinois at the  Department of Montgomery Co. Health & Human Services, where he served as Regional Administrator.  Mr. Hertel was a member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Hillsboro IL; a 45 year member of the Lions Club, where he had held all offices, including District Lt. Governor & District Governor in 1991 & 1992; Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #51 AF & AM in Hillsboro, IL; Circuit Clerk Association, where he had served as President; Hillsboro Moose Lodge #1377; Hillsboro Sports Association, where he was very involved in the building of the new Sports Complex; Montgomery County Board, where he had served as Chairman of the Board.  Mr. Hertel had received the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award & Hillsboro Chamber Award in 2014. Mr. Hertel had lived in Mulkeytown, IL & Hillsboro IL.  

Along with his wife and mother, Mr. Hertel is survived by his son, James Leonard (wife, Nichole) Hertel of Chicago IL and his grandson, Graysen James Roy Hertel.  

Memorials area suggested to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children.
