Ena Marie Hughes Hemken, 97, of Litchfield, IL, formerly of Witt, IL, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017, at 4:48 p.m. at Heritage Manor, Litchfield, IL. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL. Burial will take place in Witt Cemetery, Witt, IL. Rev. Jeff Hemken, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Hillsboro, IL will officiate.
Mrs. Hemken was born on September 15, 1919, in Bridgeport, IL, to the late John Vernon and Alta Cecil (Foster) Abernathy. She married George W. Hughes, on September 28, 1940, in St. Charles, MO, and he preceded in 1978. She then married Maynard Hemken, in 1986, and he preceded in 1992. Mrs. Hemken was a housewife, and enjoyed making lap blankets for Veterans, quilting, singing at church, loved to dance, crochet and play bingo. She was a member of Taylor Springs Baptist Church, Taylor Springs, IL and the Old Settler's Honor Society. During her lifetime she lived in Witt, IL,and through out Montgomery County, IL.
Mrs. Hemken is survived by 2 sons, Bob (wife Bev) Hughes, O’Fallon, IL and John (wife Sybil) Hughes, Orange, TX; six daughters, Marjory (husband Herb) Lakin, Huntington Beach, CA; Nancy Shipman, Hillsboro, IL; Janice (husband James) Crabtree, Litchfield, IL; Barb (husband Sam) Whitlow, Hillsboro, IL; Alta (husband John) Lovsey, Sawyerville, IL; and Helen (husband Brad) Saxby, Litchfield, IL; 22 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hemken was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, John Vernon Abernathy, Jr., Delbert Eugene Abernathy and Charles Franklin Abernathy.
